We have the plane truss shown in Figure 1. The truss carries three forces, as shown in the same figure. Point 1 has a pin support, while point 4 has a horizontal roller support. The truss is made of steel, with an elastic modulus of 20,000ksi and a yield stress of 60ksi. a) Calculate the support reactions (5 points). b) Obtain the axial forces of the truss members (10 points). c) Find the change in length for member 3-4, if the cross-sectional area of that member is 5in2 ? (5 points). d) Will member 2-3 be able to carry the axial force, if we know that it has a circular cross-section with a diameter of 1.5 inches? (5 points). e) Will member 2-3 be able to carry its axial force, if the "10 kip" force applied at joint 2 was upward instead of downward? (5 points). Figure 1
