I. Human Pedigrees. Genes that are linked to autosomes or to sex chromosomes display specific patterns of inheritance and these pattems can be analyzed using human pedigrees. Today you will leam to recognize the inheritance pattern of mutant alleles in human pedigrees when these alleles that have a dominant-recessive relationship. When a mutation is dominant it is often seen in every generation of human pedigrees whereas recessive mutations tend to skip generations. \( \mathrm{X} \)-linked traits are those that are conveyed by genes located on the \( \mathrm{X} \) chromosome. Since females have two \( X \) chromosomes, they can transmit one to either male or female progeny in their gametes. Males however, have one \( \mathrm{X} \) chromosome and one \( \mathrm{Y} \) and will therefore transmit an \( \mathrm{X} \) chromosome only to their daughters and the \( \mathrm{Y} \) chromosome to their sons.
