Question 4 Using a CEM I cement type, prepare a British (DOE) mix design for a reinforced concrete wall which will undergo 100-year exposure to carbonation under moderate humidity conditions. The mean 28-day compressive strength is 40 MPa. The wall section and reinforcement require a nominal cover of 40 mm. The available coarse aggregate is crushed Other relevant data for the mix design are as follows: • Maximum crushed aggregate size 20 mm • Aggregate (moisture) absorption 1% • Total moisture content of aggregate 3% • Bulk specific gravity of aggregate 2.63 Fine aggregate: percentage passing through a 600 m (sieve) -50% • Maximum permissible free water- cement ratio 0.45 • Workability: slump 75 mm • Minimum cement content 340 kg/m (25 marks)
Solution : Using British DOE mix design method ; 1. Find free w/c ratio : CEM I type = Portland Cement OPC From Table : Approximate compressive strength at free w/c ratio 0.5 Type of cement = OPC Type of CA Coarse aggregate = Crushed For 28 days we g
