Problem 1: Fisher Projections Fisher Projections were developed by Emil Fisher to represent the multiple chiral centers of naturally occurring saccharides (sugars) in a clear and unambiguous manner. Chemists typically represent chiral centers using wedge-dash notation. It becomes very helpful to be able to convert Fisher projections into wedge-dash notation and vice versa for effective communication between chemists, biologists, and biochemists. Convert the following Fisher projection into the corresponding wedge-dash configuration. Provide the common name of the sugar (fructose, mannose, etc.) as well as the type of saccharide (aldotriose, ketopentose, etc.). Is the Fisher projection shown a D-sugar or an L-sugar? You must explain how you are interpreting the Fisher projection to produce the wedge-dash structure as well as how you determined whether the sugar is the D- or L-form. Sections 5.11 and 5.15−5.17 of the text will be helpful for this exercise.
