2. Seawater is frozen to make fresh water. The process flowsheet shown below gives an overview of the method. First, seawater with salt concentration is chilled before being sent into a chamber at low pressure called a Flash Freezer (The prechilling process not shown in the flowsheet). The process of some water evaporating and leaving the top of the freezer as pure water vapor stream (A), cools and freezes some of the water. The Brine stream (B), which contains some ice, has a salt mass fraction of 0.0480 . The ice is separated from the brine using a filter and fed to a Melter. The salt-free water vapor (A) is compressed and is also fed to the Melter. In the Melter, which is at a higher pressure, the heat of condensation of vapor combines with the heat of fusion of the ice and results in pure cold water stream (W) product.
