2. In the assigned paper by Persat, et al. titled “The Mechanical World of Bacteria”, they describe the mechanical forces that affect bacteria that are attached to a surface, both at the scale of individual cells and the multicellular scale of biofilms. In lecture, we also discussed physical forces that make the world of microbes that aren’t attached to surfaces quite different than the physical world that we are used to living in. i) Describe the challenges that physical forces place on microorganisms both on surfaces and in suspension, ii) Compare and contrast motility when attached to a surface and in suspension, iii) Briefly explain how physical forces affect biofilm formation and function.
