1.) The is the smallest structural and functional unit of all living things. They are the smallest entities that can perform all of the functions characteristic of living things. 1. Tissue 2. Organ 3. Cell 4. Atom 5. Organ System 6. Drganism 2.) Using the numbered terms above, which of the following represents the correct order of increasing complexity in living systems (smaller to larger)? a. \( 6,5,2,1,3,4 \) b. \( \quad 3,4,1,2,5,6 \) c. \( 4,3,1,2,6,5 \) d. \( 4,3,1,2,5,6 \) 3.) List at least 5 characteristics that all living things have in common. 4.) Name the cellular structure common to all living things which contains the instructions for the oniqueness of each organism. Changes in this structure are the basis of evolution and thas diversity. 5.) All the living organisms on campus include trees, shrubs, grass, ants, files, birds, squirrels and bacteria. Together, all these organisms make up the a. the biosphere b. a population c. a community d. an ecosystem 6.) Living organisms which create most of the matter and energy for ecosystems are called the a. primary consumers b. secondary con-sumers c. decomposers d. producers 7.) Name one characteristic the organisms in the domains bacteria and archaea have in common. 8.) An amoeba is a single-celled fresh water organism. What kingdom of the Eukaryotes does this organism belong to? a. animals b. plants c. fungi d. protists 9.) Using the numbers 1-6, label the following, steps of the scientific method in the order in which they would be performed: Test the hypothesis (experiment) Analyze the data/results Form a hypothesis Ask a question Make an observation Make conclusions Scientific Method In Action: The Strange Case of BeriBeri In 1887 a strange nerve disease attacked the people in the Dutch East Indies. The disease was beriberi. Symptoms of the disease included weakness and loss of appetite. Victims often died of heart failure. Scientists thought the disease might be caused by bacteria. To test, they injected chickens with bacteria from the blood of patients with beriberi. The injected chickens became sick. However, so did a group of chickens that were not injected with bacteria. One of the scientists, Dr. Eijkman, noticed something. Before the experiment, all the chickens had eaten whole-grain rice, but during the experiment, the chickens were fed polished rice. Dr. Eijkman researched this interesting case. he found that polished rice lacked thiamine, a vitamin necessary for good health. 1. State the original problem (observation). 2. What is the question generated by the observation? 3. What was the hypothesis? 4. How was the hypothesis tested? 5. Should the hypothesis be supported or rejected based on the experiment? Explain.
